July is dry eye awareness month!

The National Women’s Health Resource Center and Allergan joined together to promote July as Dry Eye Awareness Month in 2005. Since then, many advances have been made in our understanding of dry eye, but many still reach for eye drops instead of treating the actual problem.

MGD (meibomian gland dysfunction) is the leading cause of dry eye. There is Increasing evidence that our computer/screen culture is causing serious, and sometimes irreversible, meibomian gland problems.   By the way… it is preventable.

Those of you who know us well have heard this before.  If maintenance lid care is practiced as part of a regular daily routine, the symptoms of burning, itching, watering and contact lens intolerance can be avoided. Products which help keep the lids clean such as hypochlorous acid or tea tree oil formulations are helpful in decreasing bacterial populations.   In-office lid cleanings such as Bleph-Ex, lid debridement, and LipiFlow, are deep cleaning procedures that are resemble a dental cleaning and should be considered when gland obstruction is present. We will provide a complimentary screening for anyone in your family who spends more than 4 hours per day on a smartphone/computer or tablet!
